Judy Armstrong tests out the mid-height walking boots by Hanwag
I love these versatile, lightweight, good-looking hiking boots. They provide everything I need for year-round use: comprehensive protection (uppers, sole), low weight, great grip, plus it has noticeable instep support. Consequently it feels really secure, is well insulated from rocks and feels natural and dextrous. The sole unit is particularly good, with a chunky tread, squared-off heel and shock-absorbing PU.
Flex is supple and in the right place. The upper combines suede, Cordura, Gore-Tex and a rand which includes the toe box. Lacing is fluid and easy to adjust, with a heel anchor loop and two hooks at the ankle. The tongue extends just above the cuff, and ankles are well protected.
Fit is fairly standard for British feet: snug heel box, side support with slightly less toe room than, say Scarpa’s Cyclone, although still plenty for my standard-width feet. That said, it is also available in a Bunion model with extra room around the big toe joint. I tested these boots on mountain hikes, long distance walks, on via ferrata and scrambling, even with strap-on crampons on a gritty glacier. Like all boots with a waterproof lining they get a little warm in hot weather, but it’s a fair trade-off for the support and dexterity. These Hanwag are now my firm favourites, superseded only in deep snow by a pair of higher, stiffer, warmer boots.
