Chris Townsend tests some very stretchy walking trousers from Alpkit

A high percentage of spandex makes the Chilkoots some of the stretchiest trousers tested. It’s a two-way stretch too and they have shaped knees and an extra crotch panel. This means they’re excellent for scrambling, climbing and skiing as well as walking, with no restriction to movement at all. The fabric also has a double weave with a smoother outer which helps with moisture movement. And it’s a bit more wind-resistant than most stretch fabrics. The cut is described as semi-slim, which means that they’re quite close-fitting with no excess fabric to flap around. There’s only one leg length but the hem is plain and easy to turn up.

The fabric is slightly thicker than many stretch ones which, combined with the better wind-resistance, makes these warmer and so better suited to chilly weather. At the same time, the wicking and good breathability means they’re not too hot on warmer days.

The pockets are roomy and have easy to use cord zip pullers. The thigh pocket will take a map as long as you don’t mind it sticking out of the top. There’s a smaller mesh pocket inside that will take a small mobile phone.
