In a new book, launched 22 November in Aberdeen, Ashie Brebner tells the story of the building of the Secret Howff
Book launch: Wednesday 22 November, 18.30-20.30
Transition Extreme, Links Road, Aberdeen
Ashie was a working man who left his factory job in Aberdeen in the 1960s to set up a Highland guiding company. Before that he was a member of the Aberdeen Cairngorms scene in the 1950s. As well as helping to pioneer ski mountaineering in the Highlands, he was one of the group to build the Secret Howff on Beinn a’ Bhuird in 1953.
In this book, Ashie tells of the building of the famous Secret Howff, the winter skiing season and adventures to regions considered far-flung in those days – Skye and the Outer Hebrides – and the best and worst of the Scottish hillside bothies.
The book is published by Luath this week, but the launch event is in Aberdeen on the evening of Wednesday 22 November at Transition Extreme on Links Road. In addition to launching the book, the event will be a party for a man who over seven decades has given much to the Scottish outdoors.
