Daniel Neilson tests out a diverse range of baselayers. On test Montane Zip Neck Baselayer

Montane’s new Primino range of baselayers is a blend of 25 per cent Polyester, 25 per cent PrimaLoft yarns and 50 per cent merino wool. The merino absorbs the sweat while the synthetic fabric wicks away the sweat, and out running in this top it worked impressively well, although I expected it to dry quicker. I’ve also found it pretty warm for its weight, and a tad softer to the skin than the Bergans and Rab layers. I like the zip neck, but fully done up I found it quite tight. It was perhaps on purpose for the cold weather, but I tended to leave it undone a little. There are flatlocked seams that are slightly off the shoulder so they don’t rub with a backpack. It’s a tight fit, but moved well with body and was nice and long. Primino is a nice solution and happily balances the advantages and disadvantages of synthetic and merino layers.
