A new bothy has opened at Camasunary Bay following the closure of the original shelter
Many were concerned when it was announced at the end of 2014 that the popular bothy at Camasunary Bay on Skye was to be closed. These concerns turned out to be short-lived however, thanks to the work of a number of parties committed to ensuring a shelter for walkers would remain at the bay.
While the landowner, Alan Johnson, wanted to take back the bothy for private use he still wanted to ensure that walkers in the area had a shelter. He subsequently began working with the Mountain Bothies Association (MBA) to help draw up plans for an alternative.
The solution turned out to be the British Army. At the end of 2014, 59 Commando Squadron Royal Engineers began building a new stone structure 1km from the original bothy as part of a community project. On the completion of this the MBA ‘s volunteers began preparing the site and fitting out the building, finally completing their work at the end of March this year.
The MBA announced in a statement this week that the bothy is now officially open and ready for walkers to visit.
