The Berghaus Finnan 2.0 Reflect Down Jacket is the heaviest men’s jacket tested here, but also the warmest. The down is 700fp and hydrophobic, and the jacket uses a technology called Reflect – an ‘ultra-light internal mesh’ designed to reflect body heat back to you and claimed to boost warmth by up to 20%. I’ve seen similar technologies on other jackets, and it can be hard to tell if the effect is anything more than placebo, but in this case it’s definitive: this is a very warm jacket. It’s much warmer than the Rab, despite only weighing a little more.
Couple that with the very decent back length – by far the best tested, amply covering my bottom – and the generous fit, and you have an attractive jacket for gnarly winter hill use. The hood is also big enough and has a wired brim, although the brim is smaller and floppier than the Rab’s. I also found the volume adjustment fiddly to use. The hood does the job, though, and I had no complaints wearing this jacket over all my layers in a blizzard on Beinn a’ Bhuird.
Other points to note here are the handwarmer pockets, which are a bit higher than usual and less affected by your pack’s hipbelts. They’re also lined with a luxurious fleecy fabric. The cuffs and hem are elasticated, with an adjustable drawcord on the latter. I like the wide size range available, too (although there’s no women’s version) and the price is excellent for what you get. Overall, this is easy to recommend for winter use in the British hills.
