Kirk Watson awards this jacket the best buy in his review of year-round waterproof jackets
Fit: The design and manufacturing quality in this jacket is excellent; you can tell straight away that it has been very professionally made with thought going into every element. There is a removable snow skirt too, which is handy for winter mountaineering. Cuffs are well-fitting and easily pulled over gloves.
Material: The Gore-Tex Pro used in the Trilogy works very well in bad weather. This is a proper, hard- wearing mountain jacket and stands up to abuse when scrambling over rock, using ice axes in winter and carrying a heavy pack.
Hood: The perfect hood! Superb vision all-round, effective protective visor, and adjustments in all the right places. If you need to use one, a helmet fits perfectly underneath.
Pockets: One small front chest pocket is good for a cut-down map (which is what I normally carry)
and compass. There are two other side-accessed zipped pockets, which are Gore-Tex lined and aren’t bulky – again, well-designed.
Venting: Two large underarm zip vents, which are effective.
Price: This is the most expensive jacket on trial here. You get a lot for that money though.
Conclusion: For me, this jacket looks and fits the best of all those tested. Saying all that, you’re not going to buy a jacket just for its looks. The good news is that I can’t fault any of the design or features of this jacket – it is fantastic in bad weather. A top waterproof: five stars.
