An ideal backpacker’s jacket: lightweight, comfortable, minimal in design, and when packed (into its own chest pocket if you so wish) occupies minimal pack space. The windproof, breathable Pertex Quantum fabric is silkily comfortable and a thin lining helps prevent baffles or any protrusions irritating your skin. The front zip has a baffle to deflect winds but it can fold out of position. Side pockets are elasticated, not zipped, which is comfortable for your hands; any items you want close-to-hand should fit in the capacious, secure, zipped chest pocket. The collar is deep and protective, with fleece panels for comfort at the chin, and the hem’s one-hand-operated drawcord provides a snug seal to prevent any cold draughts creeping up around your kidneys. Down jackets do come warmer and lighter but this is an impressive compromise that borrows elements of the best.
