The Target is one of the best designed jackets tested and made from one of the most breathable fabrics. It’s lightweight but has the features of a full mountain jacket. The cut is on the slim side – if you want to wear it over a bulky midlayer a larger size than usual will probably be needed. There are stretch fabric panels but I can’t say I noticed these in use. The jacket is fairly short but has an extended back that just covers my backside.
The roomy hood is excellent, fitting closely round the head and allowing good side vision when cinched down. Protection is excellent too. The big side pockets hold maps and more and aren’t covered by a hipbelt. They are mesh-lined too so can be used as vents. Combined with the underarm zips this makes for an excellent ventilation system, though I have to work hard to get sweaty in Active Shell anyway.
For year round hillwalking and backpacking the Target is an excellent jacket. The only drawback is the high cost.
