I like to have ample pockets on waterproof jackets, certainly enough for map, compass, GPS/smartphone, hat and gloves. The pockets should be accessible when wearing a hipbelt too. However, with this jacket I think Sprayway has overdone the pockets. There are three roomy ones on each side, all on top of each other. As they have separate pocket bags that makes for eight layers of fabric. Eight layers through which moisture vapour has to pass. That’s difficult enough even when there’s nothing in the pockets. One set of pockets does have mesh linings and so can be used as vents. The outer handwarmer pockets have a soft fleece lining which feels nice. Put much in the pockets and the front of the jacket feels overloaded and bulky. Even though they’d be covered by a hipbelt I think one set of pockets should be lower down.
The Fury is the heaviest jacket tested [comparative review August 2013] with a fairly thick outer fabric and a separate lining. It’s one for wearing all day rather than carrying in the pack but it should last well. Performance Shell isn’t as breathable as more expensive Gore-Tex fabrics and the pockets don’t help. There are underarm zips for cooling off. In cold weather this jacket performs okay. I think it’ll be too warm for summer though. The wired hood is the best feature – it gives good protection and moves with the head. The double front flap should keep out all rain.
