Want to know what the weather is like on Mont Blanc or Mount Whitney? Or anywhere else for that matter. Windy.com can tell you in real time and forecast what is likely to happen in the days ahead.

This fascinating app gives all the weather data anyone could want or need on colourful maps. You can zoom in and out of the maps for the detailed weather in a small area or the weather pattern for a large area or even a country or continent.

Chris Townsend’s verdict

Windy is a wonderful app for anyone interested in the weather worldwide. For walkers it’s a great way to find out what the weather is doing if you’re going overseas.

As the name suggests the wind is emphasised with moving streaks on the map showing speed and direction but Windy.com also gives all the other weather data too including rain, thunder, temperature, clouds and more. Plenty of this data comes with the free version, even more with paid Premium which includes 1-hour forecasts, 10-day forecast maps, a route planner so you can view the forecast for a whole trip, and much more.

UK forecasts are of course included but here I think the Met Office is easier to use and perhaps a little clearer. What the Met Office app can’t do and Windy.com can is send alerts for specific places, which could be useful.

Windy.com is a wonderful app for anyone interested in the weather worldwide. For walkers it’s a great way to find out what the weather is doing if you’re going overseas. It is only available online but an offline option is in development.
