The Fjallraven Expedition X-Latt has something of a countrywear aesthetic but the specification says it’s designed for the hills and I had no problems taking the hiking shirt straight into the hills last winter. The shirt has a standard seven button format but the body is longer than a standard shirt and covers my backside. I like this extra protection which on cold blowy days often keeps me from pulling on a shell.

The overall protection from the Fjallraven Expedition X-Latt Shirt is very good, the outer shell is windproof and water resistant, I’ve worn it in showers and light snow and stayed dry. The insulated fill is light and feels around the warmth of a 100 weight microfleece which gives the shirt a very wide window of use all year round. The fit is good, a relaxed slim with decent arm movement, the long length of the body carries on to the arms where the cuffs sit just behind my knuckles when undone or fastened at the looser of the two settings.
The cuffs do slip up to my wrist if I reach high though, so not an ideal scrambling layer or for use with ice axes on steeper slopes which I have tried. The cuffs also have a long placket with a fastening which allows for good ventilation and also lets me roll the sleeves up past my elbow. The collar stands up on its own and can be fastened at the chin for a complete seal.
The fastenings on the X-Latt are all plastic poppers which are easy to use with gloves on. There are two huge low set pockets with fasteners. I can get winter mitts in there and still have room for my hands. They are set under a pack hipbelt but are so big they’re still accessible and usable with a pack on. I do think a chest pocket would be a perfect addition, I do miss having one when I wear it as it’s very much a versatile all-day layer.
