Midge Specs are a new, improved version of a product from a few years ago that was quickly discontinued. Photographer and climber Tim Parkin wanted better visibility while doing the things he loves, without being eaten by the bugs in the summer months.

Overall, Midge specs are perfect for improving vision while stationary and operating ropes, cameras or other outdoor tools in the summer and it’s great that Tim has decided to revive the concept.

A standard, fine meshed midge net is attached to a pair of high-quality plastic work safety glasses. There are two types available – a larger pair for those who use prescription (or sun) glasses, and a more compact pair for those who do not. You currently need to specify which pair when purchasing on the simple website.

Both options have arms which adjust for both angle and length. We all have different head shapes, and in both cases these arms really help to dial the fit, including for kids. I was sent 3 samples (the 3rd pictured on the right was a prototype, non-adjustable pair).

The glasses are treated with an antifog coating, and we’ve had zero issues with steaming up so far, in some truly jungle-like conditions. The mesh works as expected, keeping the little biters at bay while doing stationary tasks – cooking, reading, belaying or photographing. The glasses also help to keep the mesh away from your face a little, reducing the clammy, claustrophobic feeling that comes from wearing a net. There’s enough mesh fabric to use over a hat if you prefer additional clearance.

Looking more closely, you might think the weak point was where the mesh meets the nose, but I’ve yet to have a bite while wearing these, on my nose or anywhere else. Overall, Midge specs are perfect for improving vision while stationary and operating ropes, cameras or other outdoor tools in the summer and it’s great that Tim has decided to revive the concept.
