Alt-Berg’s Made in England or Italy brand is an appealing one. All their boots are manufactured in their factory in Yorkshire or in Italy, and to a very high standard. Mention Alt-Berg and the fact the company makes five different widths of boot usually comes up – something it should be commended for. Chances are you’ll find a pair that fits you well, unless you have very wide feet (the company also makes bespoke boots).
The Mallerstang is Alt-Berg’s 3-4 season model, designed to take a flexible crampon, which it does comfortably – the soles are pretty stiff. The outsole is jagged enough for kicking into snow and the lugs are among the deepest here. The uppers are made from one piece of leather that means fewer seams for water ingress, but a waterproof membrane makes it certain.
The lacing is excellent with a locking D-ring allowing you to tighten the forefoot first. The fit, as you’d imagine, was good, and comfortable. These are warm winter hiking boots, well insulated and very solid; they have the highest and most supportive ankle cuff of all the traditional leather boots here. Crampons are easy to fit thanks to the cleated sole. The Mallerstangs are excellent – if heavy – boots, which I expect to last.
