The Berghaus Vinson is what many would describe as a traditional hillwalking jacket. It is long enough to cover your bum and has a separate mesh lining on the back, plus a solid polymide lining around the hem and on the arms. This means it is warmer than most of the other jackets, but also the heaviest at 542g for a large size. It is constructed from the manufacturer’s own AQ2 waterproof material, a durable fabric, although not as breathable as others. However, with the liner this is a warm jacket anyway.
The hand pockets are large but cut off with a hip belt, however a huge interior pocket will swallow an OS map. There’s a two-way zip that is covered by a double storm flap. The lower flap has a rain drain and is attached with Velcro – no water is going to get through this. There are two hem adjusters.
The hood has a stiffened peak and is lined, but can only be adjusted around the face with two hands – an oversight. The volume adjuster only makes a minimal difference; rather than pulling it in around the top of the head, it only scrunches up a little of the material.
Part of the weight can also be attributed to reinforced fabric around back and shoulders down to the elbows. This should be a durable jacket, and a good choice if you are looking for a longer jacket.
