Excellent lightweight down jacket

Rab launched the Microlight down jacket a decade ago and it proved very successful. Now there are three Microlight models. Recently I’ve been trying the top of the range Microlight Summit. This has a 750-fill power ethically sourced down fill with a fluorocarbon free hydrophobic treatment developed in conjunction with Nikwax. The shell is Pertex Quantum Infinity Weave and has no seams, which Rab says reduces weight and increases weather resistance. The Large size weighs 440 grams.

The Summit has an adjustable hood with a stiffened brim, a flexible peak, internal stretch seal and stretch seams. There are two large zipped pockets that are just usable when wearing a hipbelt, though the bottom is cut off, plus an internal pocket. Behind the two-way main zip is a baffle for wind protection and to prevent snagging. All the external zips are fairly chunky toothed ones rather than coil ones. The cuffs are wide pieces of stretch fabric and are easier to adjust over gloves than the more usual narrow strips of elastane.

The Summit is longer than most insulated jackets and has an extended back that easily covers my backside. Rab describes the fit as Slim so I went for the Large size. This comfortably fits over a midweight fleece.

I’ve found the Summit very warm and comfortable. The fabric is very soft and the jacket feels snug. I really like the hood. Although helmet compatible the stretch seams mean it doesn’t feel too big when worn over a bare head. Being adjustable means it can be tightened so it stays on in strong winds. The peak is also good for protection. The pockets are roomy but it would be good if they were situated a little higher up so they could be fully used when wearing a hipbelt. The jacket resists light drizzle and damp mist well. I haven’t used it in wetter conditions yet.

This is a lovely jacket and ideal for winter backpacking or just stuffing in your pack on day walks . It would have to be extremely cold before I’d wear it for walking but in camp and at rest stops it’s great.

The Summit is exclusive to Cotswold until the end of November. Rab and Cotswold have always worked closely together and the latter has always stocked the Microlight.
