I’ve used Smartwool’s lightweight merino zip neck tops for many years now and they’ve always performed well. The style used to be plain with the short neck zip and stand up collar the only features. Two years ago Smartwool revised the garment and the latest version is closer-fitting and more shaped. This redesign isn’t just cosmetic – the snugger fit means the garment is warmer, wicks faster and dries more quickly. At the same time it doesn’t restrict movement. To achieve this Smartwool has put stretchy rib knit panels down the sides, over the shoulders, in the lower sleeves and in the collar. The rest of the garment is jersey knit. Smartwool has also shaped the lower sleeves for a better fit. They can still be pulled up in warm weather. The zip is longer than on earlier versions too, which is better for ventilation. Finally the top has an extended back to stop it riding up. The NTS Light is soft and comfortable and one of the best 100 per cent merino garments I’ve worn.
