Where outdoor ‘gadgets’ are concerned, I favour simplicity and lean towards scepticism, but the Flextail Zero Pump has me second guessing my Luddism. Previous air pumps I’ve tried have been heavy, bulky, energy inefficient or just not that effective. The Zero is small, lightweight, powered by a rechargeable, removable (and replaceable) USB-c battery… and best of all, it works!

The flextail Zero is tiny, weighs very little and saves a good deal of effort, especially with higher volume mats.

The brand say that the Flextail Zero Pump is the smallest air pump available, and it certainly is compact. The weight and dimensions listed above are for the pump with a nozzle attached and battery inside – how one carries for camp use. It comes with 6 of these rubberised nozzles of varying dimensions, which fit most major air mattress brands, and an inflation and deflation fan at either end of the unit. Caution is advised when accessing the battery compartment, as the threads are very thin, but otherwise the aluminium shell seems very robust. The on/off button requires a firm press for a few seconds, thereby reducing the chance of it being triggered from a bump in transit.

The Flextail Zero PumpIt’s easy to attach and quick to inflate, even thicker winter mats. I’ve yet to exhaust the battery even on multiple night camps using it across a variety of mats – Flextail reckon up to 25 mats per charge. If you prefer a very firm mattress, you still need to top up with an inflation sack, or your mouth, as the pressure from the fan can’t quite match human powered inflation – but it does get you most of the way there and will aid mat longevity as it negates the need to completely fill the mat with moist air from your mouth. It deflates equally well, which can really help reduce pack size.
