The Mammut Astro is a neat and warm softshell hiking glove, which has a close fit around your hand. The fingers are pre shaped, which gives them a slight bend to fit the natural shape, and they are a good length so there’s not a lot of fabric left at the fingertips. This means it’s very easy to use this glove for intricate tasks, whether that’s zips and laces, or climbing and ropes. Despite these being a unisex glove, I found the range of sizes meant it was easy to get a good fit still.

The soft cuffs are fairly low volume, and slightly elasticated, as well as a velcro closure too. They are a nice length to tuck under a jacket cuff, to keep drafts out, and they are comfortable on your wrists.

The outer is stretchy with Gore Windstopper material, and the palm is a synthetic leather which is hardwearing and grippy. These provide a small amount of water resistance but it does wet out fairly quickly. There is a soft fleece lining which is warm and comfortable, and keeps your hands cosy even if they are a little damp.

Touchscreen inserts in the thumb and forefinger do work with a phone most of the time, but sometimes you need to get the right angle or push a bit harder to make them work. There are pull loops on the cuff for helping to get them on if you’ve got cold fingers already, which is a feature I really like. A smooth bit of fabric on the thumb for a nose wipe, and a connection buckle to keep them together in your bag top off the features to give a great glove that works all year round.
