The Mirrostat 7.0 is Mountain Equipment’s top end sleeping mat for warmth and weight, and it really packs a punch for the size and weight. This is the only model in this test that isn’t either a women’s mat or a petite size, so bear that in mind when comparing weights, and it becomes even more impressive. The R-value of 4.5 is the highest in this test, and pushes this mat into winter use, although it would still be on the light side for very cold weather. This insulation is due to the mylar reflective film, which is very efficient but fairly crinkly even when inflated.

Kirsty Pallas’ Best in Test

This is a fantastic mat if you’re looking for something warm and light, and willing to pay a slightly higher price for it.

Vertical baffles have slight spaces between each, which saves a few grams, but is still just as warm and comfortable. The two outside baffles are bigger to keep you in the middle, but you can still sleep whichever way you want without feeling restricted. The mat is overall rectangular with the corners slightly shaved off to again save a bit of weight without restricting sleeping.

The pumpsack is part of the stuff sack, and it folds out once you pull the mat out. It’s shaped like a windsock, so quite long and narrow, which does blow up the mat fairly quickly. But I found this tricky to manage in a one person tent when you can’t stand up, as it feels too long for the space. The valve is multifunctional with a one way seal for inflation. There’s a repair kit included too, with patches for leaks and an extra for the valve.

The recycled polyester is the lowest denier at 20D which again shaves off some weight but may mean it’s slightly less durable than the higher denier ripstop fabrics other mats use.

The Mirrostat 7.0’s packed size is 28cmx10cm, but this can be squeezed down a fair bit if you pack it next to something else. When I deflated and rolled this mat up, I can really appreciate just how small and light it goes compared to other mats I’ve used. This is a fantastic mat if you’re looking for something warm and light, and willing to pay a slightly higher price for it.
