Chris Townsend examines the some of hillwalking’s most useful garments. On test Mountain Warehouse Padded Gilet
This is the heaviest garment tested but also the warmest. It’s a chunky garment with a heavy duty showerproof shell and water-resistant zips. There’s wide flap inside the front zip and the pockets and collar are lined with fleece, which makes them very cosy. The Mountain Warehouse Frost Extreme is also the only gilet tested with a hood, a nice addition. This is down-filled and has front drawcords and a volume adjuster. It weighs 117 grams, which could be saved by leaving it at home as it’s detachable. Sizing seems on the generous side as a Small was supplied for test, which I can just wear over a 100 weight fleece, though it is a little tight.
Warmth is similar to a fairly thick insulated jacket, making this a garment for cold winter days. I think it’s great for casual use and short walks in freezing weather but I wouldn’t take it into the hills in case of need because of the weight and bulk.
