Chris Townsend examines the some of hillwalking’s most useful garments. On test Paramo Torres Gilet Light

Sensibly the Torres is designed to be worn over other layers and sized accordingly. The Medium size easily fits over an insulated top or shell jacket. The soft filling lofts well and this vest is one of the warmer synthetic ones tested. It has a warm collar and a flap inside the main zip. The pockets are roomy – the chest one will take a map and the vest can be stuffed into it for carrying. Unusually the hem pockets open upwards, which Paramo says is to ‘minimise gape’. And it does too. The inner mesh pocket is for holding damp gloves or hat so they stay warm and start to dry.
